Village aim to end FA Cup drought

Village keeper Jason Williams

North Village goalkeeper Jason Williams has urged his team-mates to end the season on a high note by winning their first FA Cup trophy for six years. The Rams take on Dandy Town in the showpiece final at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on Sunday and are confident of claiming a piece of silverware that has eluded them since completing the Triple Crown in 2006.Somewhat fittingly, that memorable victory came against this weekend’s opponents, Hornets, who won the Premier Division after finishing two points clear of runners-up Village.Williams admits that having gone so long without lifting the most prestigious domestic knockout trophy has given Village an added incentive to defeat Town.“It’s a cup we want to win because we haven’t won it for such as long period, plus it’s important to end the season well,” said the ex-Bermuda international.“The season hasn’t been a bad one but we definitely want to end it on a high note.”In the last meeting between the sides, Hornets who had already secured the title were well beaten by Village 5-2. However, in recent history Town have largely had Rams’ number, beating them once in the league and the Dudley Eve final.Williams concedes no team have tested Village quite like Town over the past few seasons.“Town are always a tough opposition and seem to raise their game against us,” he said. “They probably give us the hardest time out of any team we play.”Neither side have tasted competitive action since their respective FA Cup semi-final matches almost a fortnight ago, although Williams doesn’t believe ring-rust will be a problem for Village’s players.“It’s feels like a long time since we last played but we’re still confident, we’re training hard,” he said. “We’ve been training regularly at Bernard Park and we feel ready for the game.”A win for Village on Sunday would see their coach, Shaun Goater, complete a clean sweep of domestic trophies since taking charge of Rams in December, 2008.The former Manchester City striker has claimed the Premier Division title, three Friendship trophies, the Dudley Eve twice and the Charity Cup as Village’s boss.Sunday’s FA Cup final at the NSC kicks off at 4pm.
