CoH wants your input for developing Number Five car park

An artist?s interpretation of the Number Five parking lot on Front Street transformed into an open space. The project is now being considered by the City of Hamilton.

The City of Hamilton is seeking public input on potential changes to the Number Five car park on Front Street.Mayor Charles Gosling emphasised that no decisions have been made about its future.Questions had been raised, he said, ever since the demolition of the Number One Shed building in 2009.“I think that they realised what a wonderful waterfront we have that we’re using for parking spaces and a sole toilet,” Mr Gosling said. “It was with the removing of that building that people saw the potential.”City Secretary Ed Benevides yesterday revealed images of a grassy open space where the parking lot now sits as one of many proposals being considered.Along with providing a new public space, Mr Benevides told a public meeting that the area could potentially be used for al fresco dining. If the city decides to move in this direction, he said that the project could be completed in a matter of four weeks with an estimated cost of $100,000.There will still be sufficient parking spots at Number One, Bulls Head and City Hall parking lots to accommodate commuters, should the parking lot be removed, Mr Benevides said .The city is now looking for public input via e-mail and a survey placed on the City Hall website yesterday. The survey asks if the parking lot should remain as it is or be turned into a recreational area. It gives those taking the survey the option to give their own suggestions.Mr Gosling said that no final decision would be made until after the municipal elections in May.“I am very, very reluctant to put a project like this at the end of our tenure, but we can still do our homework for them,” he stated.Beyond that, the timeline as to when any project would go ahead would depend on public interest.“We have more things that we can do but, if this is something the public really get behind, it can change the priorities,” Mr Gosling said.www.cityhall.bm.
