St George’s MPs Dame Jennifer Smith and Kim Swan last night championed a move to allow the Old Town’s shops to open on Good Friday.All sides of the House of Assembly gave support to the Public Holidays Amendment Act, which relaxes the long-standing rule forcing stores to stay shut for the religious holiday.As a one-off, passengers aboard the Azamara Journey cruise ship will be able to visit the East End shops and provide welcome custom for traders who have long complained their area is a ghost town.St George’s North MP Dame Jennifer said tourists would get to see what a special day Good Friday is in her constituency, with traditional activities such as kite flying.St George’s West MP Mr Swan said they would get to follow the procession as well as handing over much needed dollars to the shopkeepers.Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert said if visitors are given the right message they will want to return to Bermuda.
