Hundreds of people gathered at Bermuda Athletic Association yesterday to loudly cheer on a succession of brave souls having their heads shaved for charity.Forty three volunteers were due to have their locks lopped off in support of the St Baldrick's Foundation, which raises money for children with cancer, and local cancer charity PALS.Their efforts are expected to raise close to $200,000.The plucky victims took to the stage to have their heads shaved, as well-wishers cheered in support.Greg Wojciechowski, 49, and his 15-year-old son Bryce, took part together after being inspired by a friend who participated last year.They had collected $12,500 in donations “from all over the world” by yesterday.Mr Wojciechowski, CEO of Bermuda Stock Exchange, said: “Our feelings were: we can try and make a difference.“From our perspective, it's a very small price to be able to give so much back to children, children that really need it. We did it simply because we can help.”He said the fact that PALS would ensure children on the Island benefited from the event was a big enticement to take part.Part-time nurses' aide Wanda Trott, 29, turned heads after having her naturally wavy long hair chopped off.Cries of “you look amazing” followed her around the hall at BAA after she stepped down from the stage.“It's a little chilly now,” she laughed, explaining that a friend asked her to take part and she initially refused.“Then I went home and thought about how selfish to not even think about it,” she said. “Next time I saw her, I said ‘sure, OK'. I really love kids anyway.”Jeremy Deacon, assistant editor of The Royal Gazette, said he had no regrets about signing up for the challenge.“My nine-year-old daughter Hannah took part in Locks of Love, which kind of inspired me.
