Ex-Saltus boy Toms makes bow for Wales Students

Wales Students forward Brynley Toms

Bermuda rugby player Brynley Toms represented the Wales Students against the England students yesterday in a Six Nations pre-match clash at Twickenham Stoop.Toms, a powerful prop forward, couldn’t prevent his team losing though, with Wales going down to their English counterparts 43-15.The 20-year-old former Saltus pupil attends University of Wales Institute and was part of Bermuda’s Under-20 side which won the Caribbean Championships in the Bahamas in 2010. In what was their first game in eight years the Welsh side, coached by former Wales Under 21 head coach Chris Davey, conceded five tries to an England team that had already played Portugal earlier in the year. Two of the home tries came from Cardiff Metropolitan University full back Dan Bibby and the opening score of the night came from another Welsh-based player, Cardiff Metropolitan centre Louis Messer. Bath wing Sam Miller also helped himself to two tries.Wales played a full part in the free-flowing match and were rewarded with tries from Bridgend wing Tom Williams and Cardiff Metropolitan’s Ross Wardle. Rhys Roberts landed a penalty and conversion.Toms has also played for a raft of teams in Wales including Narberth Juniors, Pembrokeshire, Whitland First XI, Carmarthenshire, Carmarthenshire County Under-16s, Scarlets Academy Under-16s, Pembrokeshire County Under-18s and Crawshays RFC.He is the son of ex-Bermuda and Teachers player Brian Toms.
