Book Cellar set to close

Closing: The Book Cellar in St George's

Long-time St George’s store, the Book Cellar, is set to close. But it’s expected to likely reopen under new ownership, with at least one party seriously interested in taking it over.Gillian White, who opened the Book Cellar on Water Street 32 years ago, said the store would close its doors at the end of the month. She said she was retiring from the business and the closure had “nothing at all” to do with the struggling economy or sales. The Island’s only bookstore east of Hamilton is known for its wide selection of Bermuda books, children’s books from England and fiction and non-fiction by British writers. It also caters to a lot of “yachties” - sailors calling in St George’s to rest and stock up on provisions.Mrs White said she expected to sell her inventory to a new owner who would also have to negotiate a new lease on the space beneath historic Tucker House with the National Trust.
