AWOL soldier imprisoned
An AWOL Bermuda Regiment solder was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment yesterday.Magistrates’ Court heard that Shiloh Henderson had attended a total of 34 drills since he was called for service in 2003.A single year of service in the Regiment requires 40 drills. The Sandys resident pleaded guilty on Tuesday to failing to attend the Regiment in 2009, 2010 and 2011.The 33-year-old also admitted failing to pay a $500 Regiment fine and failing to comply with orders to perform extra duties.Sentencing was adjourned so the court could hear more detailed information about the charges before proceeding.Asked by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner if he intended to attend Regiment drills in the future, Henderson responded: “No sir.”Mr Warner jailed Henderson for three months but refused a request by prosecutors to issue a reparation order for his now outdated Regiment uniform, valued at $500.Said Mr Warner: “He is still a man of the Regiment.”
