There have been a few articles this week that have sparked great conversation on both our domestic and international cricket scene.My specific intrigue has been with two specific articles, one being Herbie Bascome taking over as potential coach of St George’s Cricket Club and the other Charlie Marshall’s comments on the lack of attendance at training for the senior national squad.In St George’s strangely there hasn’t been a whole lot of talk regarding the upcoming season. With the name Herbie Bascome floating around with the possibility of taking over the head coaching position you can be sure the talk will liven up.In Herbie, St George’s will be acquiring a coach who has vast experience on the international stage, as he was Gus Logie’s assistant for a few years, gaining invaluable knowledge. With that said, I do believe this will be his first time fully taking over a head coaching role, but I can say from previously having him as my assistant during Cup Match that he is very organised and professional in his approach.What other candidates could St George’s be looking at if any? Lionel Cann and Clevie Wade are two other people that come to mind. I say that simply because Lionel would be a great acquisition to any team, but I do believe he has moved onto Warwick to take over the player coaching job there. Clevie on the other hand has a good track record on the local scene, but coaching in St George’s would be his biggest challenge yet.If Herbie does take over the reins as coach it will be interesting to see if Lewis Foggo is retained as chairman of selectors. Would it be morally inappropriate to have three family members on the same selection committee? In the past there have been two family members on the selection committee, which sparked some controversy as it related to favouritism. The plot certainly would thicken with three.However, Herbie in my opinion presents St George’s with their best option because he knows the players well and is respected among them and his peers.This year could be very trying for anyone taking over as coach because of the lack of numbers. With Detroy Smith and Macai Simmons suspended for the year and Dean Minors and myself both retiring from the game, along with one or two others looking to move on, the coach will have a massive challenge on his hands.The coach will have to tap into the youth squad and bring about some of the talented youth like Vance Brown, Jahquill Hill and Zenowi Bowen. These young men have a bright future and could blossom from playing in the First Division.On the international stage with Bermuda in their final preparations much has been said about this squad both positive and negative.Marshall’s comments about the guys’ lack of training comes as a surprise to me, because the sessions I have been to and watched were well attended.There has been talk of players slackening off in recent days, but if this is true it will only show in their performances. Players can’t expect to put in 50 percent of work and get 100 percent pay it just doesn’t work that way.Like it or not it is time for results to do a 180 degree turn. We have been poor for far too long. As coach, David Moore has to get positive results this time around to give the team confidence going into what will be the most important tournament of our cricketing history the 2013 Division 3 qualifiers.The pressure is on him, his coaching staff, the players and the selectors to start getting results. Someone has to be held accountable for the team’s lack of productivity. I’m a believer that if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, but if it is broken you must fix it.Bermuda, we know from our everyday lives that if you start wrong you will always end wrong.When are we going to put our house in order and bring a professional approach and stop doing things unprofessionally? It is time to put standards in place for all to adhere to and if players refuse to meet these standards then leave them right here on the rock regardless of who they are.Then and only then will we see a change in attitude and approach to the game.Players, I leave you with these words from one of the greatest coaches ever, Vince Lombardi: “Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”
