Minister gives update on Charities Act changes
Amendments to the Charities Act should be put before the Cabinet soon, according to Information Services Minister Michael Scott. The amendments are expected to give charity commissioners increased authority and create stronger reporting requirements for charities.Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, Mr Scott said he recently met with many smaller “mom and pop” charities about the proposed changes to the legislation.“I cannot emphasise too strongly the significance, the enormous value, of these small charities in our Bermuda society,” he said.“I stated that there must be adequate legislation and regulation of the charitable sector where accountability is the focus.“However, I also stressed that the Government was ever mindful not to place an onerous burden of administration on our charitable sector, particularity our small charities.”He said the amendments are hoped to come before the House during this legislative year, but in the meanwhile consultation is ongoing.
