Russell has become deadliest striker
I am a firm believer that one player doesn’t make a team, but Sunday gone I witnessed firsthand how one player can make a huge difference with a stellar performance by Raymond Beach. However, he is not alone as Antwan Russell of PHC, can also single handily win his team a game. These two guys have turned the football scene upside down this season with some dazzling displays. When the league is all said and done at the end of the year if one of these two clubs wins the title much will be owed to one of these two outstanding players.Having had the privilege of watching Antwan Russell on more than one occasion his game has elevated to another level. He is without a doubt the most prolific, dangerous striker on the island. Gone are the days of Kwame Steede and Ralph Bean dominating football. Antwan Russell’s form has sparked PHC to a respectable second place. He has matured as a player and a person to the point that his brilliance is rubbing off on those around him.PHC is a team who for years has been a force to be reckoned with. Early this season many thought they would struggle after suffering some heavy losses in early Cup competition. However, Antwon Russell has been on fire scoring a massive total of 15 goals thus far. With Dandy Town being PHC’s main rivals for the league trophy this year they too have their go to man in Raymond Beach. For years Raymond (Packy) Beach has been causing defenders chaos. Some defenders try to mark him tight, while others try to zone mark him, but no matter what he is faced with he seems to find the answer. I can’t recall the last time he wasn’t one of the top 3 goal scorers on the island. This past Sunday I witnessed firsthand from the St. George’s bench how one man can destroy a team. With some 30 minutes gone in the encounter between St. George’s and Dandy Town Raymond Beach joined the game, with Town losing 1-0. Within 5 minutes of being on the field he produced one of the neatest pieces of football I have seen for years locally. The ball was played into his feet and without looking gave the slightest of touches, splitting the St. George’s defense wide open as he found his teammate Angelo Simmons, who neatly finished making it 1-1.If that wasn’t enough in the second half when the game was in the balance up pops Beach again to produce two quality goals practically ripping the heart out of a spirited St. George’s team. His performance easily warranted a Man of the Match, plus put Town in the driver’s seat with them sitting in first place all alone. When I look at the two players I see power, speed, awareness, natural ability, hence making them very dangerous and difficult to play against. While many would say our game today doesn’t have the player quality like years ago, these two players could have played in any era. With both PHC and Dandy Town now having separated themselves from the chasing pack the title should be decided between these two teams unless something drastic goes wrong. North Village is on the outside looking in, but I think they would have to go undefeated the rest of the season to realistically have any chance. One thing I find amazing about the league is how certain teams struggle against particular teams. For example, St. George’s tends to always find a way to defeat Rangers, and Rangers always seem to give Town a run for their money and often beat them. Town on the other hand normally beat Village and Village normally ease past PHC. So it’s going to take one team to break the cycle of inconsistency and get a good run of form if they are to cause PHC and Town any trouble at the top. With Beach and Russell in the scoring form that they are in and their respective teams oozing with confidence, it will take a miraculous effort to overcome the gap. I know that one man doesn’t make a team, but these two are extra special. The question is can they be stopped and if so who will stop them?
