Investigation after ponies die in fire
An investigation is underway after two ponies died and a third was badly injured in a stable fire in Paget yesterday morning.Two stable owners who tried to rescue their animals from the fire needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.Last night, in the wake of the blaze at the Graceland Stables, in the Cobbs Hill area, scheduled harness races at Vesey Street were cancelled with the Driving Horse and Pony Club calling for members to lend a hand to help the stable get back on their feet.Emergency services were alerted to the fire at around 6am.Divisional Officer for the Fire Service Dana Lovell said: “Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with a very, very large, developed fire in some horse stables.“Firefighters with breathing apparatus and with an inch-and-a-half hose went about extinguishing the fire. They were dealing with high levels of heat and smoke and other toxins.“Firefighters were able to get the fire under control after approximately one hour and 45 minutes”Despite the efforts of the firemen, mare Bye Bye Byrd and a colt Return to Sender, were both killed in the blaze.A third pony, Tuxedo’s Lady, was badly burned and stable owners Noel Jones and Brenda Cordoza were treated for smoke inhalation after attempting to rescue their animals.Yesterday afternoon, firefighters and police officers remained on scene, searching through the debris looking for evidence while friends appeared on site to lend their support.Other animals, including ponies and goats, were removed from the farm, taken in by other stables who volunteered to help the stables while the damage is dealt with.Police said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
