Perozzi set for showdown with Ward
Teresa Perozzi’s search for a new opponent is over. The 38-year-old southpaw will step into the ring to defend her WBA middleweight belt against American April Ward during Teachers Rugby Football Club (TRFC) Fight Night to be held at Berkeley Institute Gym March 10.The upcoming bout will consist of ten, two-minute rounds and will be officiated by WBA certified judges and referees.“We can confirm that April Ward out of Arkansas will be boxing Teresa Perozzi for the WBA middleweight title,” a TRFC spokesperson told The Royal Gazette. “The WBA has conditionally sanctioned the bout and they agree that April is the next one up to compete for the title.”Perozzi’s pro record currently stands at 8-4-1 compared to Ward’s whose stands at 8-4-0 with seven knockouts.“April will be a formidable opponent. We look forward to a great event,” the TRFC spokesperson said.Perozzi added: “I don’t know much about April; whether she is an orthodox fighter or not. I just know that I will be prepared and ready when the time comes to fight her.”Mother of one Perozzi landed the WBA middleweight belt in Trinidad last month after prevailing against American Lorissa Rivas on a split decision at Woodbrook Youth Academy.Negotiations over a potential rematch between the two female boxers fell through after Rivas’ camp declined an offer to square off again with Perozzi, who was honoured last night during a reception at LV’s Ferrari Bar.“The offer was extended for a rematch and it was effectively declined,” the TRFC spokesperson said.Perozzi’s win against Rivas went some way towards erasing painful memories of her loss to German Natascha Ragosina for the WBC middleweight belt four-years ago.Victory over Ward in her next fight will earn Perozzi a shot at Lori Nelson’s WBA middleweight belt in a unifying bout local promoters are keen to have staged in Bermuda.Under existing WBA rules Perozzi has to defend her title every six months.Tickets for the upcoming Fight Night are expected to go on sale next week.
