Committee to co-ordinate Island’s celebration of Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
A committee has been formed to lead local celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen.Government House and the Cabinet Office announced the move yesterday and the appointment of Major Marc Telemaque, National Security Permanent Secretary, as chairman.The board features representatives from Bermuda Regiment, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Government House, the Cabinet Office and the Island’s two municipalities, as well as members representing the wider cultural community and the faith community.Yesterday’s press release said commemorative events would “engage Bermuda’s arts community, charities and young people in a celebration planned to coincide with events in the UK”.Governor Sir Richard Gozney said: “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is a once-in-a-lifetime event. I am sure that the celebrations planned by the committee will bring together all areas of the community and be fun for both residents and visitors alike.”Her Majesty became Queen on the death of her father King George VI on February 6, 1952. The UK has designated June 2 to 5 this year as the central weekend to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
