Burch unveiled as election candidate

Backed by members of the Progressive Labour Party David Burch announces that he will run as the candidate in Warwick North Central Constituency #27 which was formally ran by Elvin James, standing next to Mr. Burch.

David Burch was this morning formally announced as the ruling party's election candidate for Warwick North Central.A press conference held at the Lorraine Rest Home, in the constituency, was well attended by a host of supporters and branch officials.Premier Paula Cox thanked outgoing MP El James for his service and described Col Burch as someone who does not mince his words and who cares about Bermuda.Last year Col Burch resigned as a Senator and National Security Minister. He never explained why.Asked this morning whether he would serve in Ms Cox's Cabinet again, he said he would serve in any capacity. He said crime and the economy were key constituency concerns.“As a result of canvassing we have been able to get some work done in the constituency. I quite enjoy canvassing.”He said his personal priority was to “knock on every single person's door”.“We are in an area where we have won consistently and some of those people tend to be taken for granted,” added Col Burch. In a statement, Col Burch said: "Let me first thank members of Cabinet, family, friends and members of constituency 27 branch for being here today."I also wish to thank the Member of Parliament for Constituency 27, Mr. El James - I think it was “the Voice of Summer” who always referred to him as "Big El James"; and he is right. I am honoured to follow him in vying for the trust of the people of Warwick North Central and I know - his are big shoes to fill."The Progressive Labour Party is a grassroots, people's Party and our Branches are full of dedicated men and women who do much of the leg-work in constituencies while we as candidates sometimes are required to do other things."The Warwick North Central Branch is a perfect example of that dedication and commitment. I am humbled by their vote of confidence and by the warmth of the welcome they have extended to me as their candidate."From the moment I was successful in the primary, I have been in the wider community getting to know the people I hope to represent. Without exception, people have been open, honest and frank in expressing their concerns and in most cases their support for me and for our Government. These are challenging times for all of us and the constituency's issues are similar to those we hear and read about nationally."I have committed that the hard work and results for which I am known will be the way I shall serve them. I have always been available to serve wherever needed and devote my 100% effort to the task. My candidacy in constituency 27 will be no different." I remain firmly of the view that the ideals, core values and vision of the Progressive Labour Party provide what is best for Bermuda. The Premier has assembled a team of diverse talent, strengths and backgrounds and I am committed to doing my part to work on behalf of our fellow citizens. I am not waiting for an election to be called to get to work, I will continue to be on the doorstep, connecting with the people and providing them with the best representation I can offer."
