“It’s a must win-game’ says Cougars coach
Devonshire Cougars coach Dennis Brown has called tomorrow’s crunch match against champions North Village at Devonshire Rec the most important game of their season thus far. With the top five sides in the league separated by only six points, games against each other could prove critical in the run-in to the title.Cougars currently sit in third, three points behind leaders PHC and Dandy Town, while Village are five points back in fourth.Playing at home should give the edge to the Big Cats but, according to Brown, this will only matter if his men prepared and ready to fight for victory.“This is the most important game for us on Sunday and it is vital that we come into the game prepared to battle,” said Brown. “Playing at home should always give you an advantage psychologically but it is also the mentality that one also brings to the game that counts whether it is home or away.“The mood in the camp is one that the players know what has to be done and what is at stake on Sunday.”The visitors went into the Christmas break on the back of three successive defeats in the league to St George’s, Somerset Trojans and Dandy Town.Village’s fortune, however, has seemed to turn around since then, having successfully defended their Friendship Trophy over the festive period. At stake in the match for both sides is the chance to be pressuring the top two who have tricky games themselves this weekend, while the losers could all but be out of contention for the crown.Cougars have had a torrid time against Village in recent seasons, including this term in which they lost their season opener at Bernard Park 2-0.The game doesn’t set up a redemption opportunity for the Devonshire side but rather a chance to firmly put themselves in the mix with eight games to play.“I don’t believe in talking about redemption but rather of players knowing what is required and being ready to dig deep and battle because of how close it is at the top.”Dandy Town, who are in second place on goal difference, make the small trip to BAA Field where they will look to exorcise a few demons against Boulevard tonight. In their first meeting at St John’s Field, it was Blazers who pulled off one of the shocks of the season, beating Town 3-2 on their own turf, setting this match up as be a very interesting one. Also on tap for the weekend will be Southampton Rangers welcoming St George’s to Southampton Oval, with both sides hovering close to the relegation zone. The teams are level on points (ten), five points clear of bottom side St David’s.Robin Hood, also on ten points, make the trek East to visit the Islanders looking to push further away from the drop zone. A win against the league strugglers would go a long way to securing their status for next season.League leaders PHC travelled to Somerset Cricket Club last night to tackle the in-form Somerset Trojans who have shown no sign of nerves in clashing with the big boys in the top flight.
