Tyrone Smith and Arantxa King will return to Bermuda this week to be guest speakers at Bermuda Track and Field Association’s bi-annual banquet at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.Sunday’s gala event will celebrate the Island’s top athletes from the Under-17 age group right up to the Masters road running categories and will crown Athletes of the Year in each division.Previous speakers at the BTFA’s showpiece event included three Olympians, sprinter Troy Douglas, tripe jumper Brian Wellman and high jumper and Clarence (Nicky) Saunders.Long jumpers Smith and King have excelled overseas for their country over the past three years and are seen as the local leaders in athletics.BTFA president Donna Watson said she was excited about the of presence of Smith and King and said she was hoping for another successful banquet.“With both of them living overseas we felt it would be a great idea for the people of Bermuda, especially our BTFA family, to meet these two in person and hear of their experiences with both of them representing Bermuda in the previous Olympics.“ We will also be awarding our athletes of the year in the Under-17, Under-20, Open, Open Road Running and Masters Road Running categories as well as honouring our coaches because without them we will not have athletes and they give of their time willingly and volunteer their services.“The BTFA have been making huge strides in the last few years in putting Bermuda back on the map in track and field and we are very excited about that.”King has competed for Bermuda since her youth days and has recently graduated from Stanford University where she was a top-three finisher in the NCAA meet and has medalled for Bermuda in several International events.Smith started competing for Bermuda later than his female counterpart but has also won gold medals on the international stage.“We are looking forward to both of them being here in Bermuda and the athletes are excited to be hearing about their experiences.“Also, as many are aware, we are preparing to host the Carifta Games next year and not only are we going to be putting on a first class event but we are also looking forward to our athletes competing well with several of them on the medal podium.”
