Gazette missed an opportunity

A much better angleDecember 7, 2011Dear Sir,Reading Wednesday’s Royal Gazette report on the thefts which occurred on the preceding Monday, I was shocked that nobody asked the question: “Why so many?”Simple answer: The Recession. Although this was a burglary update, it was as an opportunity for you to educate the community on our current economic status, as it relates to employment and layoff figures from 2010 to 2011. It’s obvious that this problem is related to the many number of people who have been made redundant. With a short explanation in addition to ways to prevent future break-ins the article would have been more beneficial to its readers. Realising, understanding, and advising techniques on how to live would have been a better angle for the article. In addition, I’m surprised you didn’t take more time to explain ways to protect homes during these holiday times. Crime is going to be on the rise, economic challenge or not. Educating the public is essential for safety and security throughout the holidays. For example “leaving the radio on”, “having at least one low cost light on” and “being observant of those in your neighbourhood (new faces/people)”, are all tips that could have been added to help the public with techniques on how to prevent burglaries. In conclusion, after reading the article it makes me think of the people whom I know have directly or indirectly suffered from these criminal acts. More advice on who to contact when becoming victimised is important for the sanity of the general public. I believe you’ve missed out on a unique chance to not only explain the pain, but to offer a solution.AARON FURBERTHamilton Parish
