PTB producing policy document on wheelchair access on buses
Wheelchair access on buses is the focus of a policy document being put together by the Department of Public TransportationTransport Minister Derrick Burgess said all bus operators, supervisors and managers have been given a memo outlining a step by step process for handling passengers with wheelchairs or baby carriages. This will be expanded upon in a policy document to be disseminated to all staff and included in the Bus Operators’ Handbook, said Mr Burgess in a Ministerial Statement. The Minister told the House of Assembly: “This will foster clarity for passengers, existing staff members and will go a long way to ensuring that new operators know and adhere to the policy.“The Department is aware that not allowing access for wheelchair and baby carriage users would be in contravention of the Human Rights Act, Part II Unlawful Discrimination.”
