Enrolment at public schools down by 24%
School enrolment has fallen by five percent over the last ten years, according to the results of the 2010 Census of Population and Housing.The results, released on Friday, show that enrolment at public schools has fallen by 24 percent while attendance at private schools has risen by 14 percent.Despite the decline in enrolment, the census also showed an increase in the percentage of people with academic qualifications.According to the report, based on a survey of almost every household on the Island, Bermuda’s non-institutional population has risen to 64,237 in 2010, including 30,858 males and 33,379 females.The average household income rose in the past ten years from $71,662 per year to $108,052, but household bills have also increased.The median rent on the Island rose from $1,021 per household in 2000 to $1,700 in the more recent census, while the average mortgage or loan payments per month rose from $2,168 to $3,500.The number of owner-occupied households with a mortgage or loan also rose by an estimated 12 percent.Unemployment has more than doubled, rising from three percent to six percent with 2,586 people unemployed according to the census, but the number employed on the Island rose by around one percent.The areas of employment with the largest percentage increases were Real Estate and Public Administration fields, which rose by 42 and 52 percent respectively.The number of jobs in the hotel and construction fields however both took notable declines with the number of people employed in the hotel industry dropping by a third.Ethnically, the Island’s black and white population both fell slightly, while more people classified themselves as Asian or mixed race. Seven percent declared that they have Portuguese heritage.And in religion, the number of people who identified themselves as Anglican or African Methodist fell by 28 percent and 19 percent respectively, while the number who declared themselves non-denominational rose by 33 percent.Statistics also showed that males on the Island get married and have children later in life than women.The full census is available for download online at www.statistics.bm, or a copy can be obtained from the Department of Statistics on the third floor of the CedarPark Centre on Cedar Avenue.
