Man fined for using offensive words

A 52-year-old man has been fined $1,000 after telling police officers they “deserved to die like dogs in the street”.Paul Edness, 52, pleaded guilty to using offensive words towards police officers on uniform patrol on Court Street.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said Edness was standing on the opposite side of the road from the police officers when he began hurling abuse at them. The court heard how Edness had raised his right hand and said the officers “will die like f****** dogs in the street” at 8.50pm on November 25, near Swinging Doors. He then went on to say that if his son ever became a police officer he “will f****** shoot him” and later accused an officer of being “a blatant liar who needs his head testing”.Edness addressed the court to say: “I find this a total fabrication of the police. The extent of their statements is outrageous … their statements are ridiculous”.When Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner enquired why he had pleaded guilty to the offence, he said he was cursing but wasn’t cursing at the police officers.Edness was ordered to pay $1,000 or face 30 days in prison.
