Somerset Trojans 4North Village Rams 2Somerset Trojans ended the first half of their campaign with arguably the shock result of the season so far, sweeping aside defending champions North Village at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday night.A brace from Jonathon Bean and strikes from Trevin Ming and Dion Stovell helped them to victory, while Jason Lee and Sammy DeGraff scored for Rams.“I have tip my hat to my side because we came out with the right attitude and got the victory over the champions at home,” said Trojans striker Stovell.“Whenever you play the champions, at home or on the road, it is always going to be a test and we showed what we are capable of doing.”It was Stovell who opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he stepped up and slotted home a penalty.But the lead lasted 12 minutes before Lee drew Village level and the teams remained deadlocked at the break.Ming regained the lead for Trojans in the 48th minute with a free kick that flew into the Village goal perhaps a contender for goal of the year and one that sent the home fans into raptures.It also seemed to take the wind out Village’s sails.Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when they were pegged back by a Bean brace in the space of three minutes that ultimately put the match beyond their reach.Bean was given space in the 70th minute to get off his shot that beat Village youngster Rory Dublin between the sticks.Before anyone could fathom what would happen next in a match that wasn’t following the visitors’ script, Bean grabbed his second of the game, putting the match to bed.Rams skipper DeGraff managed to pull a goal back when he scored from the penalty spot but the game was already settled with the men from the West End taking a surprising three points.The win takes Trojans to fifth in the standings with 15 points, one point and one spot behind Village who have 16 points.“It is always vital to get on top of a game early on and that’s what we did. An early goal always settles the nerves and being at home it gives you added incentive to go and get the result,” continued Stovell.“Although it was tight when the scores were level, we always felt that we would get chances and it was up to us to make the most of them.“We can head into the break on a high and be ready and focused for the second half of the season. We are pleased with how this has gone.”
