PLP candidate Campbell speaks of shaping Bermuda for future generations
Former Bermuda Housing Corporation boss Vance Campbell has been named as the PLP candidate for Constituency Nine, Smith’s West.In a press conference at Alaska Hall yesterday, Premier Paula Cox announced Mr Campbell’s candidacy, describing him as a young man prepared to make a difference for the community.Mr Campbell served as General Manager of the Bermuda Housing Corporation from 2003 to 2006, and is now the chief financial officer for SAL Trading Limited and Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Board.He said he chose to throw his hat into the political arena so that he might help shape the Island for the next generation.“As a father and someone who volunteers with several organisations that focus on the young people of Bermuda, I felt obligated to become involved in the political process that will continue to shape the Bermuda our children will inherit,” he said.“I believe my education and business background, along with community involvement and life experiences, have prepared me well for this step.”Mr Campbell stressed his work with charity and community groups, including his status as vice president of the Foster Parent’s Association, a committee member and former club leader of Young Life Bermuda, and executive member of the Young Men’s Social Club’s Youth Committee.“One of the main objects of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party since it’s inception has been to work for and promote the political, economic, social, environmental and cultural progress of the people of Bermuda and to encourage their partnership in all facets of life in this country,” he said.“The 2011 Throne Speech is a coordinated and cohesive plan of action, and I am honoured to run as a PLP candidate as I believe the Premier and Party Leader has assembled a talented team, the best team, to successfully lead Bermuda through the challenges it currently faces.”While Mr Campbell does not live in the constituency, he said he has friends and family who do, and travels through the constituency on a daily basis.“To the constituents of Constituency Nine, Smith’s West, I look forward to meeting you, hearing your concerns and discussing, formulating and affecting solutions,” he said.“Although I am new to politics, I have a wealth of relevant experience to draw upon in meeting and serving your needs. In addition to this, I bring energy, enthusiasm and a preparedness to roll up my sleeves and work for you.“My office will be your streets and neighbourhoods as we work to ‘build one another together’.”Mr Campbell was previously one of several prospective PLP candidates who challenged sitting MP Ashfield DeVent’s Pembroke South East seat, losing out to Rolfe Commissiong.The Smith’s West seat is currently occupied by the OBA’s Trevor Moniz, who was elected under the UBP banner in the last election, defeating PLP candidate Larry Mussenden.
