Customs Duty on the agenda for the House
Legislators will be asked today by Government to support laws that will increase the tax burden on residents bringing in goods purchased abroad. And those who insist on illegal dumping and littering will have to contend with a host of new measures to curb their behaviour if amendments to the Waste and Litter Control Act is passed today.Meanwhile, amendments to the Protected Species Act would improve our conservation and protection regime for our threatened plants and animals. The Bermuda Airport (Duty Free Sales) Amendment Act 2011 would restrict the $100 duty free allowance to only one member per household where two or more are travelling together. And the duty payable for personal goods brought into the Island will increase from 25 percent to 35 percent, if another bill, the Customs Tariff Amendment (No 3) Act 2011, is passed. The measures are intended to boost local retailers by discouraging people from buying goods on their trips abroad.Threatened species will have a much improved chance of survival if MPs approve proposed changes to the Protected Species Act 2003.A class system is proposed which would see species placed into one of three categories depending on the vulnerability of the species and the degree of protection required. Corresponding penalties will also be created. The changes will also allow for special permits for handling species when deemed necessary.
