OBA leader Cannonier set to make his maiden House of Assembly speech today
It’s Craig Cannonier’s time to prove his mettle today as he delivers his maiden speech as a Member of Parliament and the brand new Leader of the Official Opposition.Mr Cannonier will deliver the One Bermuda Alliance’s formal Reply to the Throne Speech, which was read by the Governor two weeks ago.Immediately after the Speech was delivered, Mr Cannonier denounced it as an election document with “too much verbal hedging”.Yesterday a party spokesperson said that Mr Cannonier is keen to deliver his speech today.“He will be speaking to the need for significant change in the way Bermuda operates; change in the way we conduct business with the rest of the world, change in our political culture to make it more collaborative and change to give people greater say in the decisions that affect them all to make better use of our people and transform Bermuda into a solution-driven society,” the spokesman said.“Current arrangements and alignments are not working, clearly. How else can you account for the continuing failure of education reform, the spread of gang violence and, for the first time in our modern history, thousands of jobless Bermudians. That is what Mr Cannonier will speak about.”The United Bermuda Party also plans a formal Reply to the Throne Speech.“For the first time, with two members of Parliament, the United Bermuda Party is now Her Majesty’s Unofficial Opposition” a spokesperson said.“In spite of our fewer numbers, our two Parliamentarians have stayed committed to tackling the issues. They will continue to offer solutions and keep the Government accountable and Friday’s Throne Speech Reply will be no different.”The two UBP Parliamentarians, Kim and Charlie Swan, issued a joint statement saying: “Bermuda is facing serious challenges economically and socially and now it is imperative that we encourage our people to work together we are solution driven but will also hold the Government accountable”Besides the debate on the Throne Speech, MPs are also set to debate two new proposed laws the Bermuda Airport Amendment Act and the Customs Tariff Amendment Act, Number 3.If passed, the rate of duty payable on goods brought into Bermuda by residents for personal use, will be increased from 25 percent to 35 percent. The changes would also restrict the $100 duty free allowance for returning residents to only one member per household where more than one are travelling together on the same vessel. The measures, intended to help local businesses, are meant to be temporary.
