Greenrock congratulates PLP on election win

Environmental charity Greenrock has congratulated the Progressive Labour Party, saying they look forward to collaborating on making a more sustainable Bermuda.

Jonathan Starling, the charity’s executive director, said the organisation hopes the PLP will make addressing climate change “central” to their actions, transitioning the island away from fossil fuels.

“Climate change is one of the great challenges of the 21st Century and there is an urgent need for action across all ministries and sectors of Bermuda,” he said.

Mr Starling cited several pledges in the PLP’s election platform, including a national infrastructure plan, a green paper on mandatory recycling programmes, single use bags and beverage container deposit systems.

Other platform elements Mr Starling noted were the adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles, the expansion of community gardens and installing “green gyms” in parks to encourage healthy lifestyles.

“We encourage the new Government to revisit the Sustainable Development Initiative and relaunch the Climate Change Task Force, as well as revisit marine spatial planning and the Blue Halo concept,” he added.

“Finally, we look forward to continued Government support for our environmental sustainability education programmes which support and complement learning in our schools.”
