Birdwatchers buzzing about ruby throated hummingbirds
A group of unusual visitors has been spotted at the Coral Beach Club a trio of tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds.Bermuda Audubon Society member Peter Hopkin noticed one of the minute birds last week, with other bird watchers reportedly seeing two others.Measuring only around 4in from tip to tail, the species is the smallest bird to visit the Island.Society president Andrew Dobson said: “This species of bird breeds commonly in the Eastern half of the US and Southern Canada.“The fall migration takes it South to its wintering grounds in Central America.“The hummingbirds that arrived in Bermuda really should have stayed on the continent before flying over the Gulf.“They may continue their journey South, although there are several records of hummingbirds wintering in Bermuda.”
