City fall at final hurdle
Taurean Manders and his Capital City FC side fell at the final hurdle in their quest to win the Canadian Soccer League title after losing 1-0 to Toronto Croatia in the championship final.Croatia’s match winning goal came from a direct free kick after 20 minutes at Centennial Park in Toronto on Saturday.Manders, who was believed to have been watched by a scout from MLS side Toronto FC, came close to scoring on 77 minutes with a shot which went just wide of the post. Moments later he also hit the side-netting with another effort from inside the box.Capital FC coach Shaun Harris believed his team had played the better football and deserved to win the final.“I don’t think anybody expected us to be here,” said Harris, whose team reached the final in their first CSL season. “I thought the team played admirably, we were the better team and unfortunately the better team doesn’t always win in football.“I told the players before the game to enjoy it and give a performance to be proud of because we had people from the Caribbean, Ottawa, and the USA-possibly more than even the Toronto home side.“It’s unfortunate because I thought we were the better team for 90 minutes. It was just one mistake we made and it cost us,” said Harris.Manders, the son of ex-Bermuda national team cricketer Andre Manders, signed a one-year with Capital FC at the start of the season after impressing during trials. He is expected to be named in Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying squad for their double-header against Barbados next month.Capital City finished third in the CSL regular season.
