Bailey urged to run for BCB post

Gathering momentum: MCC member Ed Bailey has been urged to run for BCB presidency at next month?s AGM.

Prominent lawyer and former MP Ed Bailey could run for the presidency of Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) at next month’s AGM, The Royal Gazette can reveal. The former BCB president and MCC member has been strongly urged to run by a growing number of influential figures in the local cricket fraternity and is understood to be weighing his options.According to various sources, Bailey’s approval rating has steadily risen in the past several weeks, with a number of leading BCB affiliates said to be keen to have him resume leadership of the BCB.Bailey is largely credited for bringing top Test teams England, Australia, India and Pakistan to the Island during his previous term as president to afford local cricketers the opportunity to measure up against some of the world’s elite players. He was also instrumental in having the senior national team compete in the former Red Stripe competition in the West Indies as well as paving the way for local umpires to officiate in first -class matches in the Caribbean. While it remains unclear what Bailey’s future plans are, the only candidate to declare their intentions to run for Reggie Pearman’s soon-to-be vacated position is current BCB first-vice president Allen Richardson.“My love for cricket makes me want to do this job,” he told The Royal Gazette in a previous interview. “I really have a passion for cricket.”If elected, Richardson has vowed to clamp down on the unruly behaviour among players currently plaguing the sport and raise the standard of coaching and play on the pitch. The ex-St David’s batsman has served in various capacities during Pearman’s watch but his lack of experience in administration at club level is thought to have raised doubts over his ability to lead the governing body through a challenging period.“Allen hasn’t done enough at club level; he’s never had any real club exposure or been like the president of St Davids,” said former top umpire Randy Butler. “He doesn’t even want to give up playing cricket to concentrate on running it.”The past West Indies Cricket Umpires Association area vice-president believes former BCB president Bailey would be a more suitable candidate to succeed Pearman.“I think Ed Bailey would be a better choice than Allen Richardson because he has the international contacts both within the ICC and the MCC to help take local cricket forward,” he said. “Bailey’s record also speaks for itself.“I would give Ed the nod over Allen because he doesn’t strike me as being the future leader. He hasn’t made any impact in the current situation we are in and I don’t see anything different that he wants to bring to the table.”Bailey kept his cards close to his chest when reached but did not rule out possibly running for another term as BCB president.
