Bermuda’s men need to be committed to fatherhood instead of just “doing their thing” without considering the consequences.Pete Saunders, who is an advocate for positive fatherhood, is urging men to be better fathers to their children whatever their personal circumstances.He has teamed up with the Island’s churches and family charities to give out free tickets to a new movie about men who make a lifelong impact on their children.‘Courageous’, which starts today at Neptune Cinema, tells the story of four men from very different backgrounds who “face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle”. They each become fathers while wrestling with their hopes, fears and faith.Married father-of-one Mr Saunders said: “No one said fatherhood was easy, but too many men just give up.“No consideration goes into the process of fatherhood. Men have needs and they just want to do their thing without much thought for the consequences.“More thought needs to go into fatherhood. Men need to accept their responsibilities”.Mr Saunders, who became a father to five-year-old Dakari at the age of 22, is known for his candid Internet blog called Razors and Diapers, which he writes “to inspire men to fulfill their roles as fathers”.He is also the men’s ministry leader at the Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hamilton Parish.Mr Saunders, of Devonshire, has been working to bring the faith-based film to Bermuda for about a month as he believes “every father can learn from it”.When asked what men would get out of the movie, Mr Saunders said: “Those fathers who aren’t doing a good job can learn how to pick up the flak and start afresh and those that are already committed will remain committed.”‘Courageous’ has already been a big box office hit in the States with reviewers singing its praises for making people laugh, cry and cheer.Mr Saunders hopes that at least 1,000 fathers will go to see the movie, whether they are expecting their first child or have several grown-up children.He said: “This is a movie that all fathers need to see. The message is there and needs to be heard.“There can be a lot of heartache and stresses but it’s always worth it in the end. Fathers just need to remain committed and see it through.“You have to meet challenges head-on and overcome everything, but sometimes all men need is a little encouragement.“We want to offer men this encouragement in the form of a movie. This movie gives hope and inspires positive fatherhood”.Mr Saunders is a firm believer that a solution to many of Bermuda’s challenges is for men “to fully embrace and fulfil their roles” in their homes and communities.He added: “Being a father is a responsibility given to us by God. When you become a father, no one can take that role away from you”.The Family Centre and Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church are expected to give out several movie tickets to those who arrive on a first come first served basis at yet-to-be announced screenings.A group of men from Restoration Ministries will also be going to see the movie together on Sunday.‘Courageous’ is being shown at the Neptune Cinema at Dockyard at 7pm nightly, plus 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.Useful website: www.razorsanddiapers.com.
