The holder keeps the cup
The spectacle of Cabinet Minister Neletha Butterfield and Senator David Burt, the Premier’s chief of staff, tying for a second time in their party primary is remarkable. And it gives the Progressive Labour Party a headache as to how resolve a problem that few could have anticipated. Since the branch cannot decide, it is, presumably, now up to the party leadership. And it would seem that the Cup Match rule should apply, namely that in the event of a draw, the holder keeps the trophy. Thus, Ms Butterfield, as the incumbent in Pembroke West, should keep her candidacy as Sen Burt failed to defeat her. That may be unfair to Sen Burt, but no decision at this stage can possible be fair to all parties. There are no easy choices. But this is the best one.
