Bermuda’s unemployment rate sits at six percent with just over 2,500 people unemployed.The official rate was one of a handful of statistics given this afternoon as Government released preliminary results of the 2010 Census of Population & Housing.Also stated by Premier Paula Cox at a press conference held to announce the results:l Bermuda’s population totalled 64,186 in 2010 three percent higher than the 62,059 persons counted during the last census in 2000;l that number excludes 82 homeless persons and 801 houses in institutions such as the prisons, the hospitals and rest homes;l the median age increased from 37 in 2000 to 41, a move reflective of the Island’s ageing population.Said Ms Cox: “The 2010 Census was launched on May 20, 2010. It was on that day when a few hundred census workers were deployed into the community and commence their assignment to collect economic, social, environmental and technological information from roughly 27,000 households in Bermuda.“The plan for the release of the 2010 Census data has two stages. Today we release the first stage that includes preliminary results which focuses on the basic characteristics of Bermuda’s population, its size, growth, structure, race, age and sex distribution, employment and Bermudian status as it stood on May 20, 2010.”She continued: “Stage two of the plan includes the release of census data on topical and more complex issues such as child care, education, health, housing, income and economic activity. These results will be shared with the general public in December of this year.”
