Digicel launches long-distance call service

Digicel Bermuda this afternoon announced the launch of a long-distance call service for its post-paid customers. It means the cellular provider will go into direct competition with licensed long-distance call providers TeleBermuda International and LinkBermuda, formerly known as Cable & Wireless Bermuda. The move expands Digicel’s offerings ahead of telecommunications reform legislation, which is expected to tabled in the House of Assembly in November and which is intended to liberalise the sector by tearing down the current licensing restrictions.Digicel last month acquired Internet service provider Transact, in a deal that positioned the company well for reform but which did not go down well with some competitors, who were surprised the Government approved the merger.“Digicel Long Distance marks the next phase in our development as a telecommunications company,” Digicel Bermuda CEO Wayne Caines said today.“Ultimately, we are always looking for ways to provide our customers with solutions that are effortless, reliable, and convenient. With Digicel Long Distance, our customers will receive one bill with all their mobile phone expenses included. They will receive rates that enable them to stay connected to family and friends around the world at prices they can afford.”Among the three plans, is the $35 Digicel Unlimited plan with unlimited calls to the US, Canada, UK and Ireland. Top Caribbean destinations, such as Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad, will be available “at very competitive rates” via the Digicel Caribbean plan, the company added. The Digicel Ultimate plan will provide allow calls to the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the rest of the world without a monthly subscription fee.
