Woman escapes from burning apartment

A woman had a lucky escape after a fire severely destroyed her apartment just moments after she’d returned home.Flames engulfed the studio apartment in Idle Acres Road, Smith’s, as the female tenant turned on the light switch. The woman, who is in her 20s, first saw flames coming from underneath her bed and ran to safety at about 7.45pm yesterday. The blaze took hold of the apartment in just seconds and it took 12 firefighters to tackle the “severe fire conditions with temperatures in excess of 700 degrees Fahrenheit”.The fire was contained to the ground-floor apartment underneath the main house, but the woman who lived on her own lost “absolutely everything”.Divisional fire officer Dana Lovell said an investigation had been launched to determine the exact cause of the blaze. He said: “It spread very quickly, by the time we arrived all the apartment’s contents were engulfed in flames. It was extremely hot and we faced extremely strenuous fire conditions. The smoke was very thick and we had poor visibility.“The apartment was badly, badly damaged. There was nothing in there that we could salvage, absolutely nothing. We managed to remove some jewellery, but that was it.”Landlord Ian Morrison, who lives above the apartment, said he “felt very sad” but thankful that his tenant had escaped injury. He said: “The fire started when she came home and turned on the light. The flames came from nowhere, we think it must have been an electrical fault. There’s a lot of damage, everything’s gone”.Five fire trucks, as well as police officers, arrived at the scene to find the tenant outside the property. She immediately called 911 when she spotted the flames. Firefighters took about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control by tackling it from all angles, including through the kitchen of the main house.Firefighters remained on the scene until about 10.30pm and erected huge floodlights in the garden to assess the wreckage. They could also be seen continuing to dampen down hot spots. The tenant spent the night with friends.
