‘Bermuda’s a nice place, but it doesn’t seem to be able to hold the volume’
Hundreds of cruise ship passengers were left to wait on the docks in Hamilton after a ferry broke down, leaving the tender Bermudian to pick up the slack.Boston visitor Jim Clark, boarding the Bermudian at 5pm, said: “We were told they had a delay with the ferries. I’ve been here since 3.30pm waiting to go back to Dockyard.”He added: “It’s just been ridiculous I’m a diabetic and I don’t have anything to eat, so I hope I can get something on board.”The Bermudian, which rushed over from Dockyard after bringing tourists in from St George’s, has a top capacity of 750. A crowd of around 300, many of whom waited longer than an hour, queued to meet it.“I think the buses have been bad, too,” said a visiting woman, staying like most of the others on board the NorwegianGem in Dockyard. She described the buses as “overly crowded, with cranky drivers”.Darren Keane, also visiting from Boston, questioned the capacity of local public transport.“Bermuda’s a nice place, but it doesn’t seem to be able to hold the volume,” Mr Keane said, as crew members called for last passengers to hurry aboard. The Bermudian left for Dockyard at 5.10pm.A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport said the Rockaway ferry’s 5.30pm and 6.30pm runs would double up to compensate.
