Blythe looks for change of fortune
Bermuda’s Argo Group Cup hopeful Blythe Walker is optimistic he can bounce back from yesterday’s loss to Denmark’s Jesper Radich in his opening Group One flight. The veteran sailor was penalised for going over the start line early and in truth was never in contention after surrendering a sizeable lead to the 2002 Gold Cup winner.“Jesper hooked us before the start and forced us over the line right next to the committee boat and also came over himself and so we were both over,” said Walker. “But he kept his momentum better than we did and managed to get back clear of the line ahead of us.“We had to do a double dip. We thought we were clear but the committee boat decided we weren’t and so we had to go back for the second dip which was painful. That put us back about four or five boat lengths and we were never recovered that lead.“Jesper led from start to finish and there weren’t a lot of passing lanes on the course today with the breeze passing to the right.”Walker now hopes his fortunes will take a turn for the better when racing resumes.“The regatta is still wide open,” he said, “but I would feel much more optimistic if we get some more breeze.“Today was frustrating and we ended up drifting around in the rain for a few hours. I think at one point all the competitors got tired and came ashore, even though the race committee didn’t tell us to. We decided we needed some lunch.”
