Nothing recessionary
September 14, 2011Dear Sir,Today's Royal Gazette carried an opinion article by Walton Brown. Please allow me to comment:Walton, how can you say this with a straight pen? “It is without question that the global economic crisis has more significantly weakened our economy than anything done locally by this Government.”This Government is barely through 24 months (from an accounting cycle) of the global recession. Yet it has been in charge of the money for almost 13 years. Bermuda, in its 400-year history has never had a twelve year cycle in which more money was raised and even more spent! This having nothing to do with a global anything. It's not what you make, it's what you save. The Government has purchased/built programmes that independent audits as well as internal audits have verified are worth less than the monies spent at the time of building / purchasing. The Government's own Auditor General has reported the sad state of reporting and accounting by the present administration. Please do not make me list them again. As a consultant to Government you are more than aware of these questionable yet unanswered concerns. Ten years of misspending and wasteful spending has great difficulty hiding in a recession. I might also add that your claim that “Walton Brown is a social and political commentator” is lacking some honesty in as much as you neglect to mention that you currently are and have been a paid consultant to the Government. Remember “sunshine of public scrutiny”.DAVID SULLIVAN
