Tourist who died snorkelling was a former resident
The death on Sunday of a 79-year-old US visitor and former resident of Bermuda appears to have been caused by drowning, police have announced.Joe Alston had come to the Island on “a nostalgia trip”, his daughter Jan said yesterday from the family home in Statesboro, Georgia.“He lived in Bermuda for three years a long time ago,” she said. “We were all there when it happened my mother, my daughter and dad.”The family had gone together on a snorkelling trip, she said, and her father was “out far in the water” when members of the group discovered him in an unresponsive state.A distress call was sent out, and Mr Alston was brought ashore by the tour crew, but could not be revived.Police said an investigation is continuing into the matter, with the Coroner to give a final ruling on the cause of Mr Alston’s death.
