THE JOB with Joselito Vivencio
Age: 27Role: Secondee auditor of the Office of the Auditor GeneralWhat is your job? My job is basically providing accounting services to Expertise’s clients. At this time I am seconded to the Office of the Auditor General for six months, where I am busy with meeting their audit requirements. I started working for them in May 2011 right after flying to Bermuda from the Philippines to join Expertise. What is your favourite part? The best thing about my job is the continuous opportunity to apply my knowledge of accounting and auditing standards. I previously worked as an external auditor for almost seven years in the Philippines and that has given me a strong grasp of standards that I am excited to apply in my current role. Another bonus point of working in this industry is meeting people from diverse cultures, different backgrounds. It enriches one’s mind to be able to meet people and learn their culture and see the world through their eyes. What is your least favourite part? My role is very challenging and demanding as it is bound by strict standards and timelines and stress is a regular fixture. Stress brings out the best in a person but it tires the body and mind nonetheless. This is my least favourite part but good thing, lifestyle in Bermuda allows you to easily cope with stress. What is your most interesting experience at work? An interesting experience is being able to realise that despite the fact I have worked that number of years in audit, there is still so much to learn. Right now, I am widening my knowledge in Canadian standards and government practice and it is exciting to continue to learn new things. What would you be doing otherwise? If I have not been an accountant (or if I am no longer an accountant) I would probably be minding my own farm. I grew up in a farming community in the Philippines and living organically brings out the best health not only for the person but for the environment as well. I love taking care of my dogs (who stayed back in Manila) and I see myself taking care of a menagerie of farm animals. I think that will be exciting.
