Senate approves Public Accountability Act
Legislation to bring Bermuda’s public accountants in line with European requirements has been unanimously waved through the Senate.There was little debate among politicians as the Bermuda Public Accountability Act passed through the Upper House on Monday.Junior Finance Minister David Burt gave his brief on the new bill, which makes those who audit the Island’s Public Interest Entities (PIEs) abide by the demands imposed on auditors in the European Union.Senator Burt explained it would increase the standards of investigation work and ensure the system is free from possible undue influence by auditors or audit firms.Reviewers are not allowed to have conflicts of interest with the reviewed party and quality assurance reviews must take place. Failure to comply will result in penalties.Sen Burt said “Bermuda will benefit” as the bill reflects high standards and best international practice for audit firms.Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley said he understood the need for the legislation.Independent Senator Walwyn Hughes said the bill was increasing responsibility within the industry.
