Fire Service veteran retires after 39 years

Deputy Chief Fire Officer John Pacheco is to retire this month after a distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years in the Bermuda Fire Service.Mr Pacheco joined the old Hamilton Fire Brigade in 1972 at the age of 21, and within two years had qualified as a Leading Fireman.“Promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1985 then Lieutenant in 1987, Mr Pacheco was instrumental in creating a positive, respectable and professional image for the Service,” said a statement from the Fire Service.He was promoted to Divisional Officer in 1989 and later served as the Head of both the Training and Operations Divisions.The Fire Service said Mr Pacheco would be “remembered for his integrity, honesty and consistency. If it needed to be said, he said it; if an unpopular decision needed to be taken, he made it with confidence”.
