Manders reflects on ‘special’ win
Gavin Manders was all smiles over the weekend after he successfully retained his Argus Open crown by defeating Jenson Bascome at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium and completing the ‘double’ with a doubles title.Manders’ 6-4, 6-3 win in the men’s open singles avenged his early season loss to Bascome in the final of the WER Joell Memorial Tournament.“This week was a special week for me,” said Manders. “This tournament means more than any tournament I’ve played in Bermuda for years as I’ve had things off court that I was fighting as well.“Dealing with both at the same time is great accomplishment for me and it feels good to continue my winning ways, but it feels even better to learn more about myself on and off the court and how I can be better in both.“I was down in every match I played this week, and was able to fight back in every one to win it. My heart and determination continues to be a major part of my success.“Bascome and Manders, who teamed up together to win a gold medal at the Island Games in the men’s doubles, beat Alex Cooper and Jack Keyes in the men’s doubles event.Bascome and Tara Lambert took the honours in the mixed doubles competition against Manders and Jackie Lambert, denying Manders a shot at a treble of titles.“Even though I won the tournament, the best part about it was seeing the level of play from players such as Naim Azhad, Jenson, Jack Keyes and Alex Cooper, said Manders.“It’s good to see young up and coming players who love the game.“This will be my fourth time finishing the year as number one, I hope to have many more but there are a lot of young players coming for me.“I will continue to stay focused and be ready for Pan Ams in October and for any challenge I face on local soil next summer.”
