Step up, Fisheries

July 14, 2011Dear Sir,I have just read the article in the July 14 newspaper about fines doubling for illegal fishing. As with every other illegal act in society, nobody wants to be the snitch. The fishing community knows who is doing illegal activities, but there is no support from Fisheries on this matter. Activities have been mentioned, but the wardens do not pursue the matters. There are people still pulling illegal pots. The wardens need to be out and following people early in the morning to let them know they are watching their activities. They also need to be more aware of who is catching the fish and selling it to the restaurants. Do they have a licence to sell the fish? Some know a friend who has a fishing licence and they sell their fish under the friend?s licence number or they give it to the friend with the licence to sell for them.Restaurants need to be more aware of this as well. Especially with the tournaments coming up, if your "regular" guy is only Marlin fishing, how does he have Rockfish for sale? In case you were wondering, yes, the foreign boats also get in on the act. They sell their fish on our local markets as well, either directly, or by someone they are friends with that has a fishing licence.Come on Fisheries, it's time to see those boats out on the water, not tied to the dock.JUST FISHINGPaget
