King's surprise at CAC success

Fit-again Arantxa King has admitted her surprise at scooping a silver medal at the CAC Senior Championships in Puerto Rico, considering it was only her second competitive meet of the season. The former World Youth Champion posted a personal best leap of 6.47 metres in Mayaguez last week, while her team-mate Tyrone Smith grabbed a gold in the men's long jump.Because of her ring-rust, Smith placed no expectations on herself prior to the Championships and was thrilled to have jumped as well as she did."It felt good to be back out there, it was my second competition of the year so it was exciting to jump as well as I did," said the Stanford University student."I felt pretty prepared but at the same time I was a little nervous because I haven't competed that much this year."Overall though, I'm pleased and ready to get back into the swing of things."I was off my feet because of an injury which caused me to miss roughly seven months, so I didn't compete indoor or outdoor last year. It felt good to jump for once without tape and a brace."In the meantime I was –rehabbing and getting back into shape for next year and my coaches wanted to make sure I was a 100 percent healthy before I competed again."King has endured a –topsy-turvy 18 months while overcoming a micro fracture in her knee and patella tendon damage, leaving the jumper with her feet up waiting to be given clearance to return to the track.Next on the international calendar for King is the Pan Am Games in October, –although she isn't certain whether she will compete as it clashes with her college studies."I'm not sure on the Pan Am Games, I would love to go but it cuts into my studies and that's usually my rest time," she said."It all depends on the Bermuda Track and Field –Association and the requirements."It's not the ideal time for me so I don't know."
