Only medicines eligible for sale in the North America or Europe can be imported to the Island, according to legislation which was tabled in the House of Assembly.The Pharmacy and Poisons Amendment Act 2011, which was listed in the House on Friday, stated manufacturers and wholesalers of medicine must comply with the “regulatory standards of the relevant country”.According to the bill, people who import drugs commercially must register with the Minster. If they fail to do so they can be punished with a maximum three years imprisonment or a $15,000 fine.Those who import medicines for personal use are not required to register under the act, however, they can be penalised if they import drugs from outside the agreed upon zones. The offence carries the same three year maximum jail term and $15,000 fine.In addition, people who import medicines from outside the United States, Canada or the European Union may also have the drugs forfeited to the Crown.
