Volleyball juniors shine in Caribbean
Bermuda successfully played their way into the final of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association’s Junior Men’s Volleyball Championships and have secured themselves a place in the upcoming Caribbean Zonal Championships as their reward.The Under-19 squad took part in the tournament, in Anguilla, which began on Saturday and ended on Tuesday.Led by captain Daniel Fiddick and veteran Joshua Malpas, the team finished second in their round robin pool to advance to the semi-finals where they encountered French St Martin.In a tightly-contested encounter, the two teams split the first four sets before Bermuda dominated the fifth set 15-5 to earn a place in the final, where they came up against St Vincent and the Grenedines.It was another close battle, with St Vincent eventually running out winners by three sets to one.The Bermuda team duly picked up a silver medal and have earned a place in the Caribbean Zonal Championships, which take place in Jamaica later this month.Head coach Mark Hamilton and assistant coach Rebeka Matthews said they were proud of what the junior men have achieved during the past few months as a team and as individual players and how well they had represented the Island overseas.
