Activist denies charge of obstructing police officer
Community activist Carlton Simmons has appeared in Magistrates’ Court on charges of obstructing police.Mr Simmons denied wilfully obstructing Acting Sergeant Sonson on June 17, as well as publicly using offensive words.He was arrested after the incident, in which police responded to reports of a fight outside a Reid Street bar.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner set his trial date for August 10, granting $2,000 bail with one surety.Mr Simmons has claimed he was wrongfully arrested, and says he has been in contact with a woman he says was assaulted by police.He also filed a complaint against the Bermuda Police Service, alleging assault, on June 27.Speaking after his court appearance, the founder of the community group Youth on the Move said: “I spent time in jail, and two hours in the cell waiting for my surety.“I think experiences like mine are part of the reason why people don’t come forward and speak out against what they feel is injustice.”
