Rayney in court no trial date set

Former Bermuda prosecutor Lloyd Rayney made his first appearance in Western Australia’s Supreme Court yesterday after pleading not guilty to murdering his estranged wife. However, setting a trial date in the high-profile case has been delayed, according to Australian news reports, because prosecution lawyers have to sift through more than 700 statements to prepare a case brief.Mr Rayney lived on the Island with his wife Corryn Rayney when he worked as a Senior Crown counsel for the Department of Public Prosecutions in 2003 and 2004.The judge, Commissioner Kevin Sleight, said it was premature to list the matter for trial until an indictment had been filed and the defence had considered it. He adjourned the case until August 26 and continued Mr Rayney’s bail.
