Two rescued after fishing boat almost capsizes
Bermuda Maritime Operations reported a “harrowing” police rescue, after a fishing vessel almost capsized in the North Channel.A 44-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were said to be in good condition last night after summoning help by cell phone.“One lesson out of this is that, without the proper marine safety equipment, it’s going to take rescuers that much longer to find people in distress,” a Maritime Operations spokesman said. The boat, which had no Marine VHF radio or flares, proved a chore for rescuers to locate.Police got the call at about 2.20pm yesterday. The 13ft fishing boat was about a mile north of the oil docks in St George’s, close to the One Alpha Buoy, when it began to take on water. A Police Marine Unit was dispatched, and the Heron 2, accompanied by two other vessels, rescued the two from the top of the submerged boat. The crew were taken ashore at Mullet Bay, and the Marine and Ports vessel Dragon was able to save their boat.
