Smith outgunned in semi-finals
Tyler Smith fell in the Under-18 Girls semi-finals of the International Tennis Federation junior circuit championships yesterday, beaten by sixth seeded American Rianna Valdes in straight sets.It was a defeat that dashed her hopes of reaching a final on home soil. The former Caribbean Under-14 number one went down in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 at the WER Joell Stadium after being outplayed throughout the match. Not to be down on herself, however, the youngster was pleased with how the week had gone after playing some “fantastic tennis” to get herself into the semis.“It was a pretty good game today, I didn’t win but I tried my best and that’s all I could have hoped for,” said Smith.“I expected the match to be hard. We are the same age but she has played overseas more than I have and her level of experience is higher than mine, but overall I’m happy with how I got on this week.”Smith marched into the Open girls singles semi-finals after beating Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul of Thailand on Wednesday. She also beat fourth seed Anna Wierda earlier in the week. The 14-year-old will have to shrug off her defeat quickly as she boards a plane today to join up with the local contingent already en route to the Island Games in the Isle of Wight.“I enjoyed the week and now I am off to the Island Games and hopefully I will do well over there as well.”Smith became the youngest female to win a domestic title in last month’s WER Joell Memorial Tournament after beating Tara Lambert. This year’s ITF Junior Tennis Tournament has attracted nearly 100 players from 15 nations and is sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation.
