Four young people chosen for Tourism internship
Four “enthusiastic” university students have been selected to participate in the Department of Tourism’s summer internship programme.Catherine Finsness, Kenisha Pough, David Thomas and Alexa Outerbridge were formally introduced as the successful candidates last week. Tourism Minister Patrice Minors said at a special luncheon in their honour: “I am delighted to welcome this year’s successful candidates into the David Allen Internship Programme.“The students chosen for this programme are ambitious, they are enthusiastic and they have demonstrated a genuine interest in our tourism industry.“The Bermuda Government will continue to concentrate its efforts on the next generation that will succeed us, and through this internship programme, these young individuals will gain a greater understanding of our tourism product, and an even greater awareness of the marketing and sales initiatives of the Bermuda Department of Tourism.”Ms Finsness will be working with the New York Public Relations Agency iCrossing Ltd. She is a student at George Washington University in Washington D.C. currently pursuing a major in Psychology with a minor in Fine Arts.Temple University student Ms Pough will be working with Lou Hammond and Associates. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in International Business and Marketing.Mr Thomas is set to work with the Department of Tourism in their New York Office.He is studying at Ball State University, pursuing Bachelors in Business, and majoring in Geography (Travel and Tourism).While Ms Outerbridge has been placed with the Department of Tourism’s Bermuda Office and is studying Arts and Science and Hospitality at Queens University.The David Allen Internship Programme was established in 1999 in memory of late Tourism Minister David Allen.The scholarship has given scores of young Bermudians an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the tourism product since then.Candidates were selected by the Bermuda Department of Tourism and will be placed at either one of its international marketing agencies; in New York sales office or the BDOT head office in Bermuda.To qualify for the eight week internship students must be enrolled in a college or university and majoring in Marketing Communications, Public Relations, Travel & Tourism, or Hospitality Management.Students must be entering a Junior or Senior year in September.
